What causes death in sepsis patients and how to prevent it

 

Sepsis is the primary individual cause of admission in Intensive Care Units in Brazil. However, it is possible to get a different impression when considering sepsis data separately. On the other hand,
we must think that, behind every primary diagnosis of pneumonitis, urinary tract infection, surgical site infection, and peritonitis, among others that reach the ICU, there is sepsis.
Trials carried out in Brazil and the Brazilian ICUs project  – www.utisbrasileiras.com -, the largest national registry of ICU patients in the world, support this statement with data. According to the SPREAD trial, sepsis mortality in Brazil remains at around 50% and there are no substantial differences between public and private Intensive Care Units. But, after all, what do these patients die from?
