1. Background of the WHO’s approach to the topic of “patient safety”
In May 2002, the 55th World Health Assembly encouraged member states to be aware of the problem of patient safety, establishing and strengthening the evidence-based systems necessary for improving patient safety and healthcare quality.
Two years later, the 57th assembly supported the creation of an international alliance to facilitate the development of patient safety policies and practices globally, as well as acting as an important force for overall improvement. Thus, in October 2004, the World Alliance for Patient Safety was launched as a partnership between the WHO and external experts, healthcare leaders, and professional bodies.
The creation of the World Alliance was an extremely important, significant step in the struggle to improve healthcare safety. It is important to highlight that it created a unified environment, with great initiatives beyond what institutions were able, or willing, to do individually. It became a vehicle for sharing knowledge and resources, aiming to improve healthcare safety.
